The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology is an international intergovernmental organization with a current network of 64 member states, 86 signatory states and 42 affiliated centres and the three laboratories at; Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa). ICGEB has the mandate to conduct innovative research in life sciences for the benefit of developing countries. It strengthens the research capability of its Members through training, funding programmes and advisory services and represents a comprehensive approach to promoting biotechnology internationally.

ICGEB, New Delhi Component was initiated in 1988 with a specific mandate of providing a Centre for high quality basic research and for training of young scientists in broad areas of Biotechnology. Currently, ICGEB, New Delhi’s research focus is broadly categorized into three domains viz. Molecular Medicine, Plant Biology and Integrative Biology. 25 independent groups are working in these research areas on various issues relevant to the needs of developing countries. The major focus in the Molecular Medicine area is on malaria, tuberculosis, immunology, dengue and chickungunya. The Plant Biology research addresses abiotic and biotic plant stresses and crop improvement through genetic transformation. Research in Integrative Biology area covers hypothesis driven and mechanistic questions with multi-disciplinary approaches as well as development of technologies for production of biofuels.

Among the mandates of ICGEB, is the responsibility to help its member countries for developing human resource in genetic engineering and biotechnology. In pursuance of this, ICGEB conducts long-term as well as short-term training programmes. These include International doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships and practical training courses.
